A survey of British literature, 1837-1900, with emphasis on prose works that helped establish many of the genres so popular today: the Gothic/horror, mystery, and science-fiction. Possible authors and works include Christina Rossetti’s “Goblin Market,” Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, Bram Stoker’s DraculaCharles Dickens’ Great Expectations, some of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories, and H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine.
